The Texas Sharks recently took home the gold medal from the Junior Olympic Hockey USAC/RS National tournament held in Des Moines IA. The sharks earned the right to represent the south-central area after taking first place in the regional held in Waco back in early June. Most of the team has been playing together for over a year practicing at both Puck Stop in Farmers Branch and Spinning Wheels in Denton. The team has played many local inline tournaments taking first at the Presidential Cup held at Slapshot in Richardson. TX. The National tournament lasted four days for the Sharks culminating in the Gold Medal Game on July 30th. During the tournament they faced teams from Delaware, New Jersey, Illinois and Iowa. Facing the local favorite Des Moines Explosion in the semi-finals they won in overtime with a goal from the tournament MVP Chase Hegwood. The Gold medal game was against the other local favorite the Cobras who the Sharks had lost an earlier close game to in pool play (2 to 3). This time the sharks were not to be denied winning the nail biter 4 to 3. The team plays inline hockey year round with several members of the team participating in other sports as well, such as soccer and baseball. The team is made up of 11 &12 year olds, four boys from Highland Village; Tim Baca, Jake Eisman, David Murdock and Ryan Neuenberger. The team is rounded out with Chris Rycroft of Carrolton, Zack Swogger of Denton, Weston Finney of Hurst, Jason Merrell of Saginaw, Chase Hegwood of Watagua and coached by Anthony Baca of Highland Village. The Team is sponsored by the Hockey Shop in Lewisville, Puck Stop in Farmers Branch, Spinning Wheels in Denton, and Larry Lacerte of Dallas.
